Bronx, NY – August 1, 2024 – ALLWAY®, a trusted name in home improvement since 1935, is excited to announce its involvement in “For the Birds,” a vibrant new mural at the corner of West 236 Street and Riverdale Avenue. This striking artwork was brought to life by artist and Riverdale Country School art teacher Nicky Enright and highlights local bird species threatened by climate change.
The mural popped up almost overnight on the outer wall of Studio Delaj, thanks to a team effort from Enright, artist Olugbala Williams, Nils Folke Anderson, and a group of enthusiastic student interns. They got started on Wednesday, June 19, and wrapped up the project by Saturday, June 29.
“For the Birds” showcases 15 local bird species, like the Magnolia Warbler, Brown Thrasher, and Red-headed Woodpecker, all currently at risk due to climate change. The idea for the mural was sparked by an art project Enright did with his sixth graders, where they learned to identify local birds by sight and sound.
Inspired by his students’ enthusiasm and their Project Nest artwork, Enright decided to go big with a public mural that beautifies the community while spreading an important message. He chose to feature birds that are threatened by climate change to highlight the need for conservation.
The Kingsbridge Riverdale Van Cortlandt Development Corp. (KRVC) backed the project with a chunk of its $100,000 grant from New York City Small Business Services. The National Audubon Society also pitched in, funding the mural with the condition that it features birds threatened by climate change, which perfectly matched Enright’s vision.
A plaque next to the mural offers viewers a glimpse into the project’s story and details, with the title “The birds are talking; are we listening?” drawing attention to the urgency of the message. It also includes a link to the National Audubon Society’s site for more info on bird conservation.
This mural is the latest in a series of community-focused projects by Enright, who previously completed a mural at 3636 Greystone Avenue in 2021. With “For the Birds,” Enright aims to grab the public’s attention and get people thinking about local bird species and the environmental challenges they face.
ALLWAY® is proud to support a project that not only adds beauty to the Riverdale community but also raises awareness about critical environmental issues. The company remains dedicated to backing initiatives that combine art, education, and environmental care.
